For years, I have struggled with getting high liver enzymes. When Mary was born, I had HELLP syndrome and preclampsia. When you have HELLP syndrome, it affects your liver. In fact, the E and the L in HELLP stand for Elevated Liver. Even though she is turning 15 next month, I still sometimes find our my liver enzymes are elevated on routine blood work.

Years ago when my enzymes got really high, they sent me for an ultrasound of my liver. They chalked it up to fatty liver disease and let me go on my way. But more recently, a few months ago at a routine visit for my Ulcerative Colitis, I was told my liver enzymes were high again. And of course since now I have an autoimmune disorder, this sort of raised the stakes a bit. You see, when you have Ulcerative Colitis, you have more of a chance to get another autoimmune disorder. And some of those that you are more apt to get deal with the liver. One by which has no cure and affects your bile ducts as well. So my doctor did more blood work. And more blood work. And even more. Honestly I think I went for blood work at least 5 times. When they couldn't find the answer, they sent me for an ultrasound. The ultrasound didn't show anything. So they sent me for a special MRI of the liver and pancreas. And that showed nothing. So now they decided to send me to a hepatologist which is a doctor that only deals with the liver. But with all that said, during this entire time, my liver enzymes have gone down significantly!

When they first told me my liver enzymes were high back a few months ago, my ALT was 46 and my AST was 39. But this past Monday I went to my primary doctor for refills on some of my medicines and I asked them to do blood work on my liver just to see. And when the results came back in, everyone was scratching their heads. Now my ALT is 29 and my AST is 18 which is in perfect range. So why the difference? We are still trying to figure that out!

A few days ago, I was reading online and found a very interesting article about the health benefits for your liver when you take probiotics and blueberry juice together. The article goes to say that it can be a treatment for non alcoholic fatty liver disease! There was also another study that says that eating blueberries can ease and protect against intestinal irritation. And these effects are increased if you are taking probiotics as well. I thought this was an amazing health discovery especially for the fact that a few months ago I received Bio-Kult Original Multi-Strain ProbioticBio-Kult Original Multi-Strain Probiotic is the UK's number 1 probiotic supplement. It contains 14 probiotic strains for digestive and immune support and has been proven to survive the high acids of the stomach. It is vegetarian, non GMO and gluten free as well.

As someone who knows how important probiotics are for gut health, Bio-Kult Original Multi-Strain Probiotic is an amazing product! And if you take it daily and have some blueberries with it, you could potentially be helping your liver and gut even more.

The other night I ended up making a blueberry pie for dessert and it was really easy. If you use fresh blueberries in your recipe, you will have more health benefits.
