I am part of the Homeschool Review Crew. All opinions are my own.
Do you remember learning US History in school? In our school, we learned US History in 11th grade and I remember being fascinated. I loved learning about the early part of America and about all the wars, trials and tribulations this country went through. And I loved studying my textbook and taking the quizzes and tests too! But it was because my teacher made it fun and interesting. He made it like a story and that's how I love to learn. So I was thrilled to check out The Story of the Thirteen Colonies & The Great Republic with 200 Questions Set from Memoria Press for Mary. This will be her curriculum for 6th grade which is perfect since it's geared for middle schoolers coming out of elementary.
We have reviewed Memoria Press products in the past and I love their classical learning philosophy. They believe that wisdom and virtue are cultivated by studying liberal arts and the Great Books. With The Story of the Thirteen Colonies & The Great Republic with 200 Questions Set, Memoria Press combined the two-volume American history from H.A Guerber into one book for middle school study. This set is best for grades 5-8. This edition from Memoria Press does state that since the original was written years ago, that some of the events that were once considered pivotal to American History have now dulled in comparison to others with the passing of time.
The entire set contains:
- Guerber’s The Story of the Thirteen Colonies and the Great Republic edited by Memoria Press into a 211 page book
- The teacher’s guide with facts, vocabulary, questions for each chapter, map-work, drawings, and more assignment suggestions
- The student edition with 32 lessons with space for students to write definitions of vocabulary and answers for comprehension questions.
The 200 Questions About American History Set includes:
- 200 Questions About American History Teacher Key
- 200 Questions About American History Student Book
- 200 Questions About American History
- A set of flashcards
The 200 Questions About American History Set is a supplement to go along with The Story of the Thirteen Colonies & The Great Republic. Inside it will give you a weekly schedule and the recommended texts from the The Story of the Thirteen Colonies & The Great Republic book to answer questions from the drills and tests. What I really loved was that inside the student book, it will ask a question and it will give the chapter where the answer can be found. That is super helpful when you have a student that might skip over it by accident when they are searching the entire book for the answer.
For example, The 200 Questions About American History Set has for Week 1 to read Chapters 1-7 from The Story of the Thirteen Colonies & The Great Republic book and do drill questions 1-8. I really love this set because you can use the drills to help reinforce learning.
In The Story of the Thirteen Colonies & The Great Republic student book, you will have lessons that coorespond with certain chapters from Guerber’s The Story of the Thirteen Colonies and the Great Republic. For example, lesson 1 in the student book starts with Facts to Know, Vocabulary that you need to define, Comprehension questions that you can answer by reading the selected chapters in the book and then Enrichment which includes map work, making a timeline and research. Inside the Teacher's Edition, you will find all the answers which is super helpful to any teacher! The tests for the students are found inside the Teacher's Edition.
You also get a set of flashcards that can be used to memorize important people and events in history. I love using flashcards!
Overall this entire set is amazing. I love how the book starts with finding American and ends with the Spanish American War. It tells history in order like a story and that really helps kids learn better in my opinion.
I plan to use this with Mary for 6th grade as her main history program. I can't wait to see how much we learn through the year too!
